Overhaul Mandatory Training — Statewide Implementation

NSW Department of Education (DoE)

Mandatory Training Program

The purpose of this project was to streamline mandatory training to reduce the administrative burden felt by staff in schools, but applied to all DoE staff including corporate, executives, and a wide range of non-teaching staff (over 140,000 end-users).

The project received overwhelmingly positive feedback from hundreds of users across the organisation.

Key Deliverables

  • Reduced duplication to create 8 core mandatory training modules — completion spread over first year of employment
  • Delivered 3 × Annual Competency Check (ACC) modules completed annually from year two
  • Launch of a new Mandatory Training Dashboard
  • Release of a Mandatory Training procedure

Project Highlights

Reduced time Average time spent on mandatory training reduced by 49%
Increased compliance Previously at 73% or below — compliance was above 95% within one month of launch
Quality products A ServiceNow system received only 5 enquiries statewide, of which only 1 required fixing

Featured Project 2a:

The MyPath Program

Virgin Australia — Ground Operations

The purpose of this project was to build online learning resources to support the implementation of a custom-built Power App for crew leaders to quickly and easily enter feedback and performance updates.

This program was delivered while also working on other programs including Human Factors (Non-Technical Skills), Facilitation skills, and teaching team members how to use Storyline.

The Leadership Legacy Program

Virgin Australia — Ground Operations

🏆 Winner — That's Champion Award

The purpose of this project was to build leadership skills for front-line leaders across the network. The key question: "You are at the beginning of your career as a leader, but 20 years from now, what do you want people to remember about you as a leader?"

This project was recognised across Ground Operations and chosen by the General Manager from 14 nominated projects Australia-wide.

Challenges Limited design software available, complex 24/7 operation, upskilling staff to deliver
Design Software Canva, SharePoint, and MS Office — chosen purposefully as tools familiar to those delivering
Delivery Program and session guides, handouts, takeaway tools, monthly tasks and tips, coaching and preparation for mid-senior leaders

Featured Project 3:

Culture Conversation Series

QBuild, Dept Energy & Public Works

🏆 Minister's Excellence Award 2021 — Healthy & Safe Workforce

This design project had to communicate to executive leaders, office staff and Tradespersons — all in one eLearning piece — with the aim of getting Tradespersons talking about culture. Challenging? YES! But this project got across the line and won the Minister's Excellence Award.

I worked closely with Communications and Legal teams to produce an easy-to-use module in Articulate Rise (with Storyline elements) including downloadable tools and resources to support Managers in having conversations with individual team members, and as a talking point at monthly Toolbox talks.

Challenges Messaging had to be relatable to all staff, from tradespersons to executives, encouraging sensitive conversations in an environment where 'toughness' is traditionally the norm

Featured Project 4:

The OCA App eLearning

QBuild Regional and Delivery Team

QBuild worked with Noggin (Developer) to deliver a customised version of the OCA App — used to record site assessments, particularly useful when no internet is available in a disaster event.

I developed an eLearning series allowing learners to access different modules based on whether they use OCA on mobile or PC, incorporating variations for iPhone versus Android users. Storyline was used to create interactions that look and act exactly like the app — learn by doing, complete at your own pace.
